Driving Change in Retail Recycling
The Challenge
RetourMat works with UK retail giant John Lewis to responsibly recycle its customers’ old mattresses as part of the retailer’s mattress replacement and removal service.
As part of this valuable add-on service, John Lewis collects customers’ old mattresses and takes them to one of its distribution hubs. This is where RetourMat comes in.
RetourMat collects the mattresses from John Lewis and transports them to its specialist recycling facilities, where they are broken down into their component materials by a team of skilled operatives, supported by innovative recycling technology including RetourMat’s pocket spring recycling machine.
The recovered components are then processed and recycled, enabling valuable materials to be returned to manufacturing and helping to keep them in circulation for longer.
Results
As a direct result of the partnership, John Lewis was able to collect and recycle approximately 58,000 mattresses in 2016 alone, diverting more than 1,500 tonnes of waste from landfill.
RetourMat continues to work alongside John Lewis to recycle its customers’ old mattresses, helping the retailer reduce waste, recover valuable materials and lower the environmental impact associated with mattress disposal.
