How RetourMat Rejuvenates Returned Mattresses: Giving Quality a Second Life

At RetourMat, we believe that a returned mattress doesn’t necessarily need to become waste. Many mattresses returned through comfort guarantees and sleep trials have only been used for a short period and still have years of useful life ahead of them. Through our specialist mattress rejuvenation process, suitable mattresses can be professionally assessed, sanitised, quality checked and prepared for resale.

The result? Longer product lifecycles, less waste and an opportunity for retailers to recover value from customer returns.

The process begins when returned mattresses arrive at our rejuvenation facility. Each mattress is individually registered and identified according to client-specific requirements. This careful data capture provides traceability throughout the rejuvenation journey and gives our retail partners visibility over their returned products.

Every mattress undergoes a thorough 22-point inspection carried out by our trained team. We assess everything from structural integrity to overall condition against quality criteria agreed with each individual client. Only mattresses that meet the required standards progress to rejuvenation. Those that aren’t suitable can instead be directed into our recycling process, allowing their component materials to be recovered and kept in circulation.

Mattresses approved for rejuvenation move through RetourMat’s bespoke sanitisation process.
This includes:

  • Peracetic acid fogging
  • UV sanitisation technology

The process is designed to treat 100% of the mattress surface area, with batch swab testing carried out before and after sanitisation to verify cleanliness.

Our rejuvenation process is designed to bring suitable mattresses up to the required cleanliness standards before they can progress towards resale. This is a critical part of the process, helping our retail partners maintain consistent quality while giving customers confidence in rejuvenated products.

Sanitisation isn’t the end of the process. Before a mattress is approved for resale, it undergoes a final inspection by our Quality Assurance team. This ensures it meets the agreed standards and requirements of the individual retail partner. Mattresses that don’t pass final quality assurance can be redirected for recycling rather than becoming waste.

Once approved, rejuvenated mattresses are protectively repackaged and can be relabelled according to the retailer’s requirements. This ensures the mattress is protected during storage and transportation and clearly identified before returning to the retailer.

The rejuvenated mattresses can then be returned to retailers, ready to enter the next stage of their lifecycle. For retailers, this provides an alternative to writing off suitable comfort guarantee and sleep trial returns. For the mattress itself, it means remaining in use for longer before eventually reaching the recycling stage.

RetourMat’s rejuvenation process provides retailers with a structured and traceable way to manage suitable mattress returns.
Each mattress is:

  • Individually registered and traceable
  • Subject to a detailed 22-point inspection
  • Professionally sanitised
  • Quality assured before approval
  • Protectively repackaged for resale

This gives retail partners greater transparency over their returned products while helping maintain the quality standards their customers expect.

Cleanliness is fundamental to our rejuvenation process.
Mattresses suitable for rejuvenation pass through our specialist sanitisation process using peracetic acid fogging and UV technology. Batch swab testing is carried out before and after sanitisation to verify the effectiveness of the process.
Every mattress must also pass our quality assurance requirements before it can be approved for resale.

Where a mattress remains suitable for use, rejuvenation can extend its useful life and retain more of the value and resources already invested in the product. For retailers, it can transform customer returns from a potential financial loss into an opportunity to recover value. It can also reduce unnecessary waste and support wider sustainability and circular economy objectives. And when a mattress can no longer be rejuvenated, RetourMat’s recycling operations provide the next route – recovering its component materials so their value can remain in circulation.

If your business offers comfort guarantees, sleep trials or manages significant volumes of mattress returns, RetourMat can help you explore a more circular approach.
