What is mattress recycling?

A mattress may have reached the end of its useful life, but the materials inside it haven’t.

RetourMat provides a specialist commercial mattress recycling service for retailers, manufacturers, local authorities, waste management businesses, hospitality providers and other organisations across the UK.

At our recycling facilities, mattresses are dismantled and separated into up to 19 component materials, including steel, foam, textiles and wood. These materials are then segregated, processed and quality checked before being sent for further processing and manufacturing.

By recovering these valuable materials rather than treating mattresses as general waste, we help businesses reduce their environmental impact and support a more circular economy.

Collection & transport

We work with businesses to create an efficient collection and logistics solution for unwanted mattresses, transporting them to our specialist recycling facilities for processing.

Assessment & dismantling

Every mattress goes through a waste acceptance procedure before being dismantled by our trained team and separated into its individual component materials.

Material separation & processing

Materials including steel, foam, textiles and wood are segregated and processed separately. Pocket springs are processed using our specialist technology, which separates the steel springs from the surrounding polypropylene.

Back into circulation

Recovered materials are quality checked and sent for further processing and manufacturing, giving them a new purpose and keeping valuable resources in circulation.

Recycling is about more than keeping mattresses out of landfill. It is about retaining the value of the materials inside them.

By separating mattresses into their individual material streams, RetourMat can recover resources such as steel, foam, textiles and wood so they can be processed for use again.
